General Overview
Derek is a well-mannered man who is comfortable around people. He loves to socialize, but also loves solitude from time to time. He loves to be in command, which can be a downside sometimes, but always has a cool head. He enjoys strolling around the ship/station he is assigned to, learning every corridor, just in case.

Strengths & Weaknesses
Derek's strengths include piloting, engineering, as well as diplomacy. He is also good at composing music and singing. His weaknesses lie in science and medicine. Because he likes to be in command, on occasion it gets to his head and he forgets his real position.

Ambitions
Derek wants one day to be in charge of his own ship. And since he's inherited most of his genes from his El-Aurian father, he sees a very long Starfleet career ahead of him.

Hobbies & Interests
Derek enjoys flying everything from old-earth aircraft, to old starfleet shuttles, to re-creations of alien starships in his spare time. He loves to read, as well as compose music. Derek enjoys solitude from time to time, in order to keep such a cool head.

Personal History
Derek was born in 2344 on Earth, in Australia. His father is an Admiral in Starfleet, and his mother teaches at Starfleet Academy. His father was rarely around, since he was stationed on a starbase far from Earth, so his mother cared for him. Derek is the oldest of 4 children. Jason, 34, is a starfighter pilot in Starfleet and has been in the same postings as Derek for 6 years, and is also married to a nurse, Roberta Halson. Kayla Shaks-Nobel, 29, is a stellar cartographer married to Victor Nobel who is a lawyer in Starfleet JAG. Rhys Shaks is the youngest of the siblings, 19, and has been traveling with Derek since he was 15 with the ambition of becomming a journalist. Derek started off as just a regular fighter pilot, but he showed extra effort in his job, and quickly became the lead pilot. Shortly after that is when his brother Jason was assigned with him. After his squadron commander died in the Dominion War, he has been promoted to squadron commander, and has been for a few years now. He recently applied to be Fighter Group Commander, and is awaiting Starfleet's response.
